L’Urederra Foundation for Technical and Social Development (LUREDERRA) is a non-profit, private Technological Centre created in June 1999 by the association of several public authorities, financial organizations, RTD organizations and companies in diverse productive fields, totalling more than 20 independent entities.

LUREDERRA performs activities of RTD on behalf of the industries and other economical agents within its sphere of influence, followed by implementation of the innovations developed at their production sites. The organization is a Spanish CIT (Centre of Innovation and Technology) recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Science with the number 98. Main RTD fields where LUREDERRA is active are:

Nanotechnology: LUREDERRA is a reference in the manufacturing of simple and complex nano-oxides with small sizes and high purity. The Centre counts on a state-of-the-art in pyrolysis nanoparticle production plant with a capacity for continuous operation up to 1 kg/h and lab-scale facilities (from 10 to 100g/h) for R&D activities. In addition, the Centre is highly skilled in physical-chemical treatment of nanoparticles for dispersion and integration as well as functionalization and in the development of coating technology and functional surfaces. This includes substrates such as glass, metal, porous (concrete, stone, wood, etc.) and polymers Among the functionalities developed are water repellence, self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, anti-scratch, conductivity or anti-fouling among others.

Advanced materials: Advanced processing of plastics, including co-extrusion-blowing, mono and double screen extrusion, moulding injection. Surface treatment of fibre and mineral nanoparticles. Development of filled polymer composites with different properties (antimicrobial, barrier effect, improved UV resistance, conductivity, biodegradability, etc.), multicomponent systems with controlled response or sensorised intelligent materials, etc.

Advanced environment: Development of technologies related with reduction, recycle and revalorization of organic/inorganic wastes. The field also comprises the application of new materials for diverse fields such as purification treatment of gas and water wastes.

In addition, Lurederra has a large trajectory in international cooperation. The Centre has coordinated 19 of the total 43 European projects it participated in, ranging from FP4 to Horizon 2020 including LIFE and ECO-Innovation programs. Since its creation, the Centre has been coordinator of numerous projects such as CRAFT projects COOP- CT2004-508698 “PURILEACH”, COOP-CT2004-018003 “NANORUB”, COOP-CT-2006-032766 ”RECFINMIX”, SME-2011-286834 “BIOSURFEST” and SME-2012-315425 “WOOD-FLARETCOAT”, as well as the NMP call projects such as CP-FP 228885-ADVANCE-FSP and the project NMP2-SE-2012-310312 “RECYVAL-NANO”.

LUREDERRA is also participating in several projects belonging to Horizon 2020 such as “PARTIAL-PGMs-H2020-NMP-2015- 686086” related to the development of novel high performance hybrid TWV/GPF Automotive catalysts, “INNOVIP, H2020-EEB-2016- 723441”, Innovative multi-functional Vacuum-Insulation-Panels (VIPs) for use in the building sector or AFTERLIFE: Advanced Filtration TEchnologies for the Recovery and Later conversIon of relevant Fractions from wastEwater. H2020-BBI-JTI-2016.

The centre has also coordinated several projects in other programmes such as ECO-INNOVATION and LIFE+, mostly related to environmental issues, wastewater and waste revalorization. Some projects coordinated by LUREDERRA in these Programmes are LIFE RECUMETAL (LIFE14 ENV/ES/450), RECYCLED- PVB (LIFE09 ENV ES/000501), REC-POLYOLEFIN (LIFE10 ENV ES/000460), UNIDIGES (LIFE10 ENV ES/000294), WATOP (LIFE11 ENV ES/000503), PURIWAT (LIFE12 ENV ES/000684), REMPHOS (LIFE12 ENV/ES/000361), WS-REC (ECO/10/256180), RECYWASTEOLHIVA (ECO/11/304331) and BENTOMET (ECO/13/630345).

Role in the project:

LUR will use its extensive expertise in nanomaterial production, photocatalysis and production of anti-corrosion and anti-fouling solutions to lead: 1) the upscaling of the photocatalytic materials, 2) development of HM ion removal subsystem, and 3) development and implementation of Waste2Fresh anti-corrosion and anti-fouling solutions for the wastewater treatment and ERAK machinery.
