Environmental Impact

The environmental gains in absolute figures and weighted against EU and global environmental footprints

The main UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDG), which the EU has signed up that are pertinent to Waste2Fresh are SDG6 and SDG12. A summary of how Waste2Fresh will deliver major environmental gains in the context of SG6 and SG12 are summarised below.

SDG6.3 By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally: Waste2Fresh will achieve TRL7 by the end of this project (2023) and reach market (TRL9) by 2025. The adoption of Waste2Fresh between 2025 and 2030 will considerably contribute to SG6.3 as the system will reduce pollution by wastewater from textile and other energy-intensive industries, eliminate dumping (no contaminated sludge) , reducing untreated wastewater from adopting industries by 100% ( > the 50% target) and leading to closed-loop recycling and safe reuse of the treated water and other recovered resources (e.g. HM and salts).

Benefits:

  • Clean Water
  • No Dumping of contaminated water
  • Less demand on water resources
  • Recycled energy
  • Recycled water
